You might think that some people are just born creative while others are just not wired to be creative. Anyone can become more creative if they work on it. Like any other skill, being creative takes practice and dedication.
Here are a few things you can start doing today to get your creative juices flowing:
Carry a Notebook
Carrying a notebook gets your thoughts and ideas (both good and bad) out of your head so you can focus and be present in the moment instead of trying to remember every little thing that pops in your mind.
- Quickly jot down your ideas and thoughts and come back to them.
- Make a point to review your notepad regularly.
- Keep all your old notebooks, you never know when you might need them.
[blockquote]Always carry a notebook. Write everything down. When you have an idea, write it down. When you meet someone new, write down everything you know about them. That way you will know how much time they are worth. When you hear something interesting, write it down. Writing it down will make you act upon it. If you don’t write it down you will forget it. THAT is a million dollar lesson they don’t teach you in business school! [/blockquote] - Aristotle Onassis
Surround Yourself with Creative People
It has been said that you are like the five people you spend the most time with, so if you want to be more creative spend your time with people who are creative! Choose to spend your time with people who inspire you and push you to move outside of your comfort zone.
Getting enough sleep is vital to creativity. If you are tired and running on empty you will not be able to put forth your best ideas.
Studies have shown that people who reach REM sleep and are able to dream release emotional baggage and negative information stored in their memory.
Reading is one of the best ways to get your creative juices flowing. Reading allows you to educate yourself, to become aware of other points of view and to escape from reality for a short time.
You should make a goal to read at least one book per month. You will be surprised at the effect it has on you and your thought process.
We live in a beautiful world and there is not better way to refresh your creative-self than to get outside and enjoy nature. Fresh air and sunlight does amazing things to the mind and the body.
Turn off the TV
Just turn it off. As a society we are addicted to TV. Watching TV has replaced family game nights and dinners. If you are watching 2 or 3 hours of television a day how can you expect to have original thoughts?
If you can’t go cold turkey commit to watching only one hour per day. You will be happy and amazed at the other things you will find to fill your time.
Hopefully after reading this you are feeling more inspired to get out there and work towards becoming a more creative person. Make sure to leave your own thoughts or advice on what has helped you become more creative below!
