Crafting a Brand: Choosing a Domain Name

When a business is coming online for the first time, there is a LOT to do.

Any good internet marketing firm will tel you that the most important part of putting together a web presence is brand consistency.

You do not want to be COMPANY-TOWN.COM, @companystate on Twitter, and CompanyTownUSA on Facebook. Not only does brand segmentation make it harder for customers to find you, it also hurts your search engine optimization efforts.

So how do you choose a domain name and make sure to secure all the corresponding social media usernames?

This website allows you to check availability of your handle on all the social networks at once.

Some of the really important networks for social media marketing are:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Pinterest
  • Google+ (Usernames have not rolled out to everyone yet on this one.)
  • Tumblr
  • and many many more...

So before you buy that domain name, make sure you can get all the social profiles as well.

This post is the first in a series that we will eventually putting together as a kickstart guide for our inbound marketing clients. It may evolve over time, and not all the posts will be entirely finished. I hope that I learn what the material really should be about from this open writing experience.
