If you pay attention to the SEO & web publishing world, you may have noticed a new platform emerging over recent weeks.
I first noticed that many of the Influencers I follow on LinkedIn were publishing to this new "medium".
So what is Medium?
[blockquote]A better place to read and write things that matter Medium is a new place on the Internet where people share ideas and stories that are longer than 140 characters and not just for friends. It’s designed for little stories that make your day better and manifestos that change the world.[/blockquote]
I took it for a spin. It is invitation only at this point, and they screen heavily. We were lucky enough to be invited to publish! Thanks Jimothy.
It is indeed a beautiful place to write. The lack of options is incredibly refreshing actually. It is not meant to be littered with fancy formatting, photos or other clutter. Just your ideas.
In that way it serves the purpose of being a great place to tell stories. Coming from one of the founders of Blogger (a publishing platform so popular, Google bought them out.), we are not surprised.
Can a business avoid having their own blog and just use Medium?
Not if you are interested in the long term success of your business. It is important to never rent your platform. In the end, you are publishing on someone else's server, and are not contributing to your domain's visibility in SERP's (Search Engine Results Pages).
So how should I use Medium?
I look at it as another place to share and be seen. It should be viewed as a social media platform.
If you have some ideas you would like to share that are too long for Twitter, and you feel should reach beyond your Facebook Friends, give Medium a shot.
