Online shopping is easy, convenient and almost totally devoid of human contact. Perfect for those of us who prefer shopping in our pajamas (without the odd looks from strangers). But as a seller, that human element could mean losing some sales.
How you ask? Without your friendly and knowledgeable sales person there to guide the customer into an upsell or cross-sell, you could be losing valuable dollars.
But wait! Not all is lost! It's easier than you might think to upsell or cross-sell to a shopper using some savvy inbound marketing tips and tricks.
Sell it in the copy
Take advantage of your short editorial space. Recommend a pair of jeans with some shoes or a top (don't forget those valuable SEO keywords!) - you just created a quick cross-sell.
If someone is looking at a base model, ask them if they are looking to upgrade to the new Pro-version. They might not have even known it existed and you've just marked them for an upsell.
Suggest specific items
Some of my favorite sites to shop on take the guess work out of browsing. They feature products grouped together on each page that are similar or could pair easily with the product I am looking at - an easy to use cross-sell.
Say for example you are selling smartphones. Don't forget the case Mr. Customer. Or the car charger. Or the adapter. Or the screen protector. Or the phone charm. Or the extra longer charger cable. See what I am getting at? Cross-selling at its finest!
Even though you might be missing the salesperson in your online store, you can still take advantage of cross-selling and upselling your customer in clever and creative ways.
